MUST HAVE: LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum

MUST HAVE: LiLash Purified Eyelash SerumWomen, who are not blessed with thick, sultry eyelashes or have observed their lashes falling out for one reason or another, have turned to eyelash growth products to regain what they have lost – including me!

I used to use Latisse on my lashes, but after a few months, the heavy price tag on the tiny prescription bottle left me budgeting just to afford my favorite lash boost. I loved my new longer lashes and didn’t want to give them up, but I could no longer justify spending $127.50 for a one month’s supply, plus doctor visit costs just to refill my prescription. Once my lashes returned to their original meager and pitiful selves, I set out to find a more affordable option.

After SkinMedix’s did a product feature on LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum, I decided to give it a try. Eight weeks of daily application, and my longer, fuller lashes are back! While I’m still paying $139.97 a bottle, I’m saving money on doctor visits because there’s no prescription needed. Also, you get double the product compared to Latisse, and since it comes in a self applying tube, you’re not wasting product by using drops on disposable brushes. (I always felt like half my Latisse was lost in those dinky brushes.) I’m now starting my third month and I still have more than half of the bottle left. I’ve read a lot of other reviews and most women are finding they get 6 months of daily use with one bottle. Unlike other eyelash growth serums, LiLash is used once daily for eight to twelve weeks. Then once you are satisfied with your lashes, you reduce use to only two times a week. In one year, I was spending $1530 on Latisse. Now I’m getting the same results for $279.94 – that’s a savings of $1250.06!

I didn’t experience any major side effects with this product. My eyes were a little itchy the first couple of days, but only as a result of using too much. Once I reduced the amount I was applying, the irritation stopped immediately. I learned a little goes a long way, and you don’t need more than one coat. If your eyes water at night, like mine do, I suggest using this product in the morning. My nightly tear production was washing the product down my face. I only discovered this when I found I was growing lash-like hair on my cheek bones! Not a cute look, to say the least. I now apply LiLash in the morning, instead of at night, and I haven’t experienced this problem since.

Check out my Before and After photos below:

BEFORE

AFTER 8 WEEKS

It looks like magic…but it’s REAL!

So how does LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum work? To answer this question, we need to take a closer look at the ingredients of Lilash. One of its main ingredients is Lupinus albus (commonly known as white lupin) seed extract. This extract contains the factor that stimulates eyelash growth. Lilash also contains Prunus amygdalus (or almond) seed extract, which accords protection to each eyelash thereby giving it protection. Another key ingredient is panthenol, a moisturizing agent that keeps eyelashes supple and glossy and less prone to breakage. Silica, also included, prevents the eyelashes from breaking.

How to Apply LiLash:

  1. Apply once a day, morning or evening, to clean dry skin. Allow LiLash to dry for 2 to 3 minutes before applying other cosmetics.
  2. Remove the applicator from the tube and carefully wipe off any excess product on the inside of the tube.
  3. Apply the applicator to the skin of the upper eyelid along the lash line from inner to outer corner of the eye. See illustration below.
A single application stroke is all that is required. LiLash is highly concentrated so little is needed for your best lashes.

Ditch the expensive brand and stop fussing with messy glues and fake lashes, and experience the luxury of your own natural long lashes. With one swipe of your mascara, and you will be camera ready!

Have you used LiLash Purified Eyelash Serum? What was your experience? Send me your Before and After photos to gina@skinmedix.com! I would love to see them!

The New SPF FDA Regulations

Unless you’ve been under a rock (hopefully in an effort to avoid the sun), you’ve likely heard the ruckus over the new sunscreen FDA regulations, that were suppose to take effect this summer. The idea was to make it easier for consumers to pick the best product to protect themselves from skin cancer and skin damage. But just as the summer was about to start, the FDA announced it was delaying the new requirements until December.

“After we published all these requirements, we received data showing that manufacturers wouldn’t be able to fully implement all the requirements until December of this year for most products,” says the FDA’s Reynold Tan.

The new requirements include:

  • Only sunscreens that protect against both ultraviolet B (UVB) and ultraviolet A (UVA) light could be labeled “broad spectrum,” which means they provide the best protection against skin cancer.
  • Sunscreens that don’t have SPF of at least 15 would have to have big warning labels that say they don’t protect against skin cancer or “premature skin aging.”
  • Terms like “sunblock,” “waterproof” and “sweat-proof” would be banned. Sunscreens would be permitted to claim that they are “water-resistant” but would have to specify how long they work — either 40 or 80 minutes.

For now, consumers will just have to try to do their best. Some sunscreens that meet the new guidelines, are starting to show up on store shelves. But consumers have to look very carefully to figure that out.

“Make sure that the broad spectrum term appears right next to the SPF number, either directly to the left of it, or right on top of it. And it has to be in the same font, meaning it has to be in the same type size, same color, generally the same appearance as the SPF number,” Tan says.

Below is a list of SPF products tested under the new FDA regulations that are now available at SkinMedix!

For a more in-depth look at the new sunscreen regulations, visit www.fda.gov/sunscreen. In the mean time, check out this video below as New York dermatologist and editor of Clinics in Dermatology, Dr. Gervaise Gerstner, explains the new SPF FDA Regulations.

How to Age like a Supermodel

Some of our favorite supermodels are still looking great long after their days on the covers of magazines have passed. It is hard to beat Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, and Christie Brinkley when it comes to aging gracefully. These women look stunning! Luckily for us, these three gorgeous ladies have shared some of their tips on aging and still looking beautiful!

Cindy Crawford, Age 46

  • Workouts matter – Crawford does resistance workouts at least three times a week.
  • She is vigilant about skin care – she applies  vitamin-c serum, like SkinMedica Vitamin C + E Complex, in the morning, and uses a moisturizer with sunscreen, like Murad Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 20 PA ++, after work outs. She also uses an AHA pad, like Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad, before bed a couple of times a week.
  • Crawford keeps her weight constant so she doesn’t stretch her skin with fluctuating weigh.

Heidi Klum, Age 37

  • Heidi thinks about her whole body when she thinks about aging – starting with nutrition. She drinks a glass of milk every night with dinner.
  • She keeps her energy level up by starting her days with early morning workouts.
  • Heidi never leaves the house without applying a moisturizing SPF, like Murad Clean Scene Down for Defense SPF 15 Moisturizer, to her face. “I learned not to go in the sun early on in my career. A tan lasts for a week or two before it fades, and the sun is so damaging—it’s not worth it.”
Christie Brinkley, Age 58

  • Brinkley eats a healthy diet because it helps her to feel her best. It’s not about the weight it’s about feeling good.
  • Christie is in perpetual motion. She incorporates simple exercises like squats and leg lifts into everyday activities. Why not do leg lifts when you’re drying your hair?

From the look of these photos, these women know what they are talking about! What do you do to age gracefully?

Managing Symptoms of Eczema & Psoriasis

Eczema & PsoriasisEczema and psoriasis are some of the most challenging skin conditions encountered by skin care professionals. Often, there will simply be a little red rash on the skin and you may be left scratching your own head trying to figure out how it came to be. Up to 20% of the world’s children suffer from eczema I and II, and up to 3% of adults suffer from either eczema or psoriasis III Given that the world population just reached the 7 billion mark, that’s a lot of people!

The truth is, it isn’t known exactly what causes eczema or psoriasis. The good news is, more and more is being learned about these inflammatory skin diseases and strategies are being developed to effectively manage their symptoms. It is important to note that neither condition is contagious, nor are they infections; and they aren’t transmitted by physical contact or exposure. The origins of eczema and psoriasis are genetic. However, the triggers that cause their distressing and visible symptoms may include stress and environmental factors. Eczema and psoriasis create impaired barrier functions and increased inflammation, so “your goal will be to protect and repair,” explains Dr. Claudia C. Aguirre of Skin Inc. Magazine. “Remember to always check first with your physician for contraindications to medications and therapies, because some ingredients may counteract each other. For example, salicylic acid may seem a likely choice for exfoliating psoriatic skin, but could in fact, inactivate a common topical treatment for psoriasis,” she warns.

Gentle cleansing and exfoliation is crucial to allow the penetration of rich, emollient moisturizers used on dry, sensitive skin. Use anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as red hogweed, ginger, oats and chamomile, coupled with barrier-repairing oils, including evening primrose, borage, argan and sea buckthorn. Try PCA Skin Dry Skin Relief Bar pHaze 10ideal for cleansing dry or more sensitive skin. We recommend PCA Skin ReBalance pHaze 17, for its ability to help soothe reddened or irritated skin. Or try iS Clinical Body Complexto help soothe even the most compromised skin conditions with natural acids, Retinol, Vitamin B5 and other soothing antioxidants. Avoid harsh exfoliants and detergents, and look for ingredients, such as lactic acid. Finishing a treatment with a physical sunscreen, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide will ensure that harmful UV rays do not cause further damage. Try Cellex-C Sun Care SPF 30 Plus — silky-smooth and PABA-free, it provides light moisture in combination with photo-aging protection.

Light therapy is another management option for those suffering from psoriasis and eczema. Light therapy is known for its ability to promote blood flow and decrease inflammation. These benefits help to diminish and lighten the redness often associated with eczema and psoriasis. Try Bio Red Light LED Therapy — a non-invasive, at-home light therapy device. It encourages natural cell renewal without requiring down time for healing, making it perfect for those with a busy lifestyle.

There is no cure for eczema or psoriasis, but there are ways to manage symptoms. Although eczema and psoriasis are clinically distinct from one another, they do share some common features that may can addressed in the treatment room and at home. For more information on the treatment and management of eczema or psoriasis, visit SkinInc.com or ask your physician.

Get Better Skin While You Sleep

Sleeping Beauty

Just because you’re out cold doesn’t mean your skin is off the clock. In fact, the hours you’re sleeping may be the best time to help your skin look its best. Take advantage of the epidermal downtime with these easy tips to make you a sleeping beauty.

Just Add Water (and Soap)

Sounds like a no-brainer, but many women don’t bother washing their face at night, especially if they don’t wear makeup. Any dirt, debris, and oil that has collected on your skin will clog your pores while you sleep — and lead to inflammation and acne. If you don’t wash first, any product you apply won’t be as effective if there are layers of grime in the way. SSo, at night, be sure to wash your face with a gentle daily cleanser like, Pro+Therapy MD Skin Balancing Cleanser that removes environmental impurities, makeup and excess oil. You’ll want to take off any eye makeup as well — pigments from liners and shadows can get into your eyes and create irritation, and left-on mascara may cause your lashes to break.

Brighten, Hydrate, and Restore

“When asleep, your metabolic rate is lower, so you’re not producing as many skin-damaging free radicals. Plus, you’re not exposed to environmental pollutants or UV light that can harm the skin,” explains Mary Lupo, M.D., a New Orleans based dermatologist. “Because your body doesn’t have to work at skin protection overnight, it can instead focus on repairing the damage done throughout the day,” she says. So any products you use will be that much more effective at hydrating, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and brightening.

Assume the Sleep Position

Your most comfortable sleeping state may not be the best for your beauty. “The single biggest reason for accelerated aging of the skin is sleeping on your face,” warns Lupo. “The skin is compressed and doesn’t get enough circulation, so it breaks down and creases, forming wrinkles.”

And if you sleep face down, fluid pools and causes puffiness. Experts recommend sleeping on your back, with two pillows under your head to keep the blood flow moving. If it’s too tough to change your sleep position, consider a silk or satin pillow that won’t pull at the skin and use an eye cream like, DermaQuest C-Lipoic Eye Therapy to reduce dark circles and eliminate under eye puffiness.

Facial Scrub Tips for Glowing Skin

Facial Scrub Tips for Glowing SkinIf your skin is feeling dull and lacking that healthy glow, it might be a time for a facial scrub. It’s important to exfoliate your skin on regular basis to remove dead skin cells that can clog up pores, cause breakouts, and make your skin look less radiant. By removing the layer of dead skin cells, your skin’s new tissue is revealed.

There is great selection of products that are meant for exfoliating and scrubbing your face. When going beauty shopping for a facial scrub, shop with your skin type in mind. If you have sensitive skin, don’t buy the products with the most heavy chemicals. We recommend Wilma Schumann Gentle Skin Scrub, a gentle and natural skin scrub for deep cleansing and removal of impurities. If your skin is oily, go with the oil-free options like, SkinCeuticals Micro Exfoliating Scrub, designed to help open congested skin. This mild exfoliating gel combines natural microbeads with gentle cleansing and hydrating agents to thoroughly cleanse pores and promote healthy cell renewal without damaging or drying skin.  For dry skin, exfoliating is crucial because your skin will absorb any moisturizer you use much better. Try Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant, a non-abrasive exfoliation treatment to thoroughly remove dulling surface debris, dramatically improving skin texture and combatting dryness.

If you want to splurge a bit and bring that spa feeling to your home, consider buying an electric, battery-operated facial cleanser. Clarisonic Pro Skin Care System with 4 Speeds takes cleansing to a whole new level! Clarisonic is the sonic technology proven to gently yet effectively loosen dirt and oil to clear your pores. The Clarisonic Mia Skin Care System is a compact, take-anywhere version of the original, groundbreaking Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System. Both systems use sonic frequency pulses at more than 300 times per second, thoroughly cleansing pores and creating noticeably healthier looking skin.

MUST HAVE: SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque

MUST HAVE: Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 MasqueThere’s something addictive about the fresh glow a great mask can give your skin. You can imagine my frustration over the past few months when the masks I’ve tried left my skin feeling tight, dry, and definitely not glowing. That is, until I found the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque.

I was surprised how this mask initially felt on the skin… the cool gel and initial tingle wasn’t what I expected. But wow, does it work! I have oily skin, but some of the other products I use leave my skin dry on the surface. This product makes my skin feel soft, hydrated and smooth without feeling at all oily. I use it more than once a week and have had great results, especially on my chin and neck where my skin tends to get more dry. This B5 enriched masque left my skin feeling moisturized and nourished, not dry and taut.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque was inspired by the award-winning Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Gel. This highly concentrated masque infuses dehydrated and stressed skin with optimal amounts of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to replenish depleted moisture levels. Enhanced with a unique complex containing constituents of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), this weekly hydration treatment re-establishes the water balance critical for maintaining skin metabolic functions at optimal levels. Hydrating B5 Masque plumps moisture-deprived skin to restore a healthy, youthful appearance.

Want to give it a try? SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque is available in travel sample packs – great for sampling before you spend on the full size. Already LOVE this masque? It is also available in a larger 8 oz. Pro-size. Same great masque in three available sizes for whatever your needs are!

Have you tried SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Masque? What did you think?

Before & After Laser Resurfacing

Laser Skin Treatment - SkinMedix.comAfter you have made the decision to receive laser skin resurfacing treatments and your appointments are booked, you should start to prepare for caring for your skin. Skin care for laser resurfacing begins even before the procedure is performed. Most complications following laser resurfacing are caused by failure to properly take care of the skin after treatment. Using the right pre- and post-op skin care products will promote faster healing times and even reduce the appearance of bruising and discolorations immediately following your procedure.

(It is important to note, that in this post, the word “patient” is used because a medical professional is performing the actual treatments.)

Pre Laser Care

This consists of sun avoidance 3-4 weeks before and some pre conditioning with Retin-A therapy and bleaching topicals, likePCA Skin Pigment Gel. This exceptional combination of hydroquinone, phenylethyl resorcinol, and kojic, azelaic and lactic acids, helps to exfoliate, lighten and inhibit hyperpigmentation and age spots. These creams are usually stopped 5 days prior to the procedure.

Post Laser Care

There are three essential components of post laser resurfacing skin care:

  • The skin must be kept moist with topical cream or ointment
  • The skin must be kept clean, all secretions and skin debris removed
  • Sun block and prevention is essential for the new skin

Immediately after the procedure, a thin layer of petroleum ointment should be applied for approximately 5-7 days. For pharmaceutical grade petroleum, we recommend Skinceuticals Primacy Hydra Balm. Originally designed as a healing ointment, Hydra Balm accelerates recovery of skin surface lipids. Also during this period, it helps to keep the skin wet with frequent showers and soaking with wet gauze to help gently remove some of the sloughing skin.

Dead skin cells and secretions, if not removed, can lead to skin infection and subsequent complications such as scarring. Keeping the skin clean and free of secretions is very important especially during the first few days after laser resurfacing. Cleansing must be gentle, as you do not want to remove new skin cells that are forming after the laser treatment. The best, most effective, and comforting method is to apply saline soaked gauze sponges to the face. Every 3-4 hours the sponges are changed with a gentle wiping to remove accumulated debris. After 7 days most patients can begin using a gentle facial cleanser, like Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser. Formulated for sensitive or traumatized skin, this mild cream cleanser removes excess impurities and oil without drying the skin – ideal for following skin rejuvenating procedures. Most patients can also incorporate a gentle facial moisturizer, like Neocutis Bio-Restorative Cream with PSP. The first and original cream formulated with PSP, this product helps promote recovery and skin restoration after cosmetic or dermatological procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser and/or light treatments and cosmetic surgery.

After your skin has healed, you will also want to wear the right makeup – something you may not have even thought about. Certain makeup products are more irritating than others, and you will want to choose a makeup that is ultra sensitive and all natural for your post laser skin. Mineral makeup, like Priori Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals (coming soon to SkinMedix!), is a great choice because it is all natural and does not cause irritation – even to the most sensitive skin. Also, with ingredients like zinc oxide built in, mineral makeup has sun protection, too.

After a few weeks, your doctor may recommend the use of a vitamin C serum and add back in a topical RetinA cream and/or a bleaching topical. We recommend Obagi Professional-C Serum 20%, a peptide and antioxidant blend that provides maximum daily antioxidant protection by repairing and strengthening skin cells and their function. The high levels of Vitamin C  offer greater penetration than other Vitamin C products, while improving elasticity and stimulating collagen production.

Sun avoidance continues for 4-6 months. That includes avoiding the sun as much as possible and using sunscreens, wide hats, sunglasses and so forth when having to be in the sun. Try Cellex-C Sunshade SPF 30 Plus, an azure-blue, alcohol free, sun protection cream containing beneficial sea botanicals and herbal extracts with exceptional calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Formulated to be used in conjunction with Retin-A therapy and other photosensitizing medications, including AHAs.

Lasers are excellent for many different types of skin resurfacing, but if you don’t do your part and take care of your skin before AND after the treatments, a lot of the benefit is lost and you take the risk of doing damage to the healthy delicate skin you worked so hard to get.
