FAQs: International Shipping

Q&A: International Shipping - SkinMedix.comDelivery speed to your location depends upon shipping method. A package shipped via  Economy mail International can take from 4-6 weeks for delivery. Express mail International is usually delivered within 7 days.

Unfortunately all international packages are subject to varied delays by customs so a more accurate timeline cannot be estimated. In fact, two packages sent to the same address on the same day may not arrive in the same week. Please be assured that all orders are shipped within two business days of receipt by SkinMedix.com, and in many cases the very same day.

Before & After Laser Resurfacing

Laser Skin Treatment - SkinMedix.comAfter you have made the decision to receive laser skin resurfacing treatments and your appointments are booked, you should start to prepare for caring for your skin. Skin care for laser resurfacing begins even before the procedure is performed. Most complications following laser resurfacing are caused by failure to properly take care of the skin after treatment. Using the right pre- and post-op skin care products will promote faster healing times and even reduce the appearance of bruising and discolorations immediately following your procedure.

(It is important to note, that in this post, the word “patient” is used because a medical professional is performing the actual treatments.)

Pre Laser Care

This consists of sun avoidance 3-4 weeks before and some pre conditioning with Retin-A therapy and bleaching topicals, likePCA Skin Pigment Gel. This exceptional combination of hydroquinone, phenylethyl resorcinol, and kojic, azelaic and lactic acids, helps to exfoliate, lighten and inhibit hyperpigmentation and age spots. These creams are usually stopped 5 days prior to the procedure.

Post Laser Care

There are three essential components of post laser resurfacing skin care:

  • The skin must be kept moist with topical cream or ointment
  • The skin must be kept clean, all secretions and skin debris removed
  • Sun block and prevention is essential for the new skin

Immediately after the procedure, a thin layer of petroleum ointment should be applied for approximately 5-7 days. For pharmaceutical grade petroleum, we recommend Skinceuticals Primacy Hydra Balm. Originally designed as a healing ointment, Hydra Balm accelerates recovery of skin surface lipids. Also during this period, it helps to keep the skin wet with frequent showers and soaking with wet gauze to help gently remove some of the sloughing skin.

Dead skin cells and secretions, if not removed, can lead to skin infection and subsequent complications such as scarring. Keeping the skin clean and free of secretions is very important especially during the first few days after laser resurfacing. Cleansing must be gentle, as you do not want to remove new skin cells that are forming after the laser treatment. The best, most effective, and comforting method is to apply saline soaked gauze sponges to the face. Every 3-4 hours the sponges are changed with a gentle wiping to remove accumulated debris. After 7 days most patients can begin using a gentle facial cleanser, like Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser. Formulated for sensitive or traumatized skin, this mild cream cleanser removes excess impurities and oil without drying the skin – ideal for following skin rejuvenating procedures. Most patients can also incorporate a gentle facial moisturizer, like Neocutis Bio-Restorative Cream with PSP. The first and original cream formulated with PSP, this product helps promote recovery and skin restoration after cosmetic or dermatological procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser and/or light treatments and cosmetic surgery.

After your skin has healed, you will also want to wear the right makeup – something you may not have even thought about. Certain makeup products are more irritating than others, and you will want to choose a makeup that is ultra sensitive and all natural for your post laser skin. Mineral makeup, like Priori Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals (coming soon to SkinMedix!), is a great choice because it is all natural and does not cause irritation – even to the most sensitive skin. Also, with ingredients like zinc oxide built in, mineral makeup has sun protection, too.

After a few weeks, your doctor may recommend the use of a vitamin C serum and add back in a topical RetinA cream and/or a bleaching topical. We recommend Obagi Professional-C Serum 20%, a peptide and antioxidant blend that provides maximum daily antioxidant protection by repairing and strengthening skin cells and their function. The high levels of Vitamin C  offer greater penetration than other Vitamin C products, while improving elasticity and stimulating collagen production.

Sun avoidance continues for 4-6 months. That includes avoiding the sun as much as possible and using sunscreens, wide hats, sunglasses and so forth when having to be in the sun. Try Cellex-C Sunshade SPF 30 Plus, an azure-blue, alcohol free, sun protection cream containing beneficial sea botanicals and herbal extracts with exceptional calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Formulated to be used in conjunction with Retin-A therapy and other photosensitizing medications, including AHAs.

Lasers are excellent for many different types of skin resurfacing, but if you don’t do your part and take care of your skin before AND after the treatments, a lot of the benefit is lost and you take the risk of doing damage to the healthy delicate skin you worked so hard to get.

Study Shows Exposure to Energy Efficient Lightbulbs Can Cause Skin Damage

Study Shows Exposure to Energy Efficient Lightbulbs Can Cause Skin Damage

Researchers from Stony Brook University have reported that compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs emit UVC and UVA radiation found to be damaging to human skin tissue in close proximity. CFL bulbs were designed to offer a more energy-efficient alternative to incandescent light bulbs.

Recently, CFL exposure was found to exacerbate existing skin conditions; however, the effects of CFL exposure on healthy skin tissue had not been thoroughly investigated. The team measured the amount of UV emissions and the integrity of each bulb’s phosphor coatings. Significant levels of UVC and UVA were found to be released from cracks in the phosphor coatings. Cells exposed to CFLs displayed a decrease in turn over rate, migration, collagen contraction and an increase in free radical damage. They found that the cells responded to UV radiation emitted from the CFL bulbs in a similar manner to UV radiation from the sun. Tests were repeated with incandescent light bulbs of the same intensity. The incandescent light bulbs, however, did no damage to healthy skin cells.

The researchers recommend being careful when using CFL bulbs, to avoid exposing skin at a close range and to place them behind a glass cover.

Find more on the results of this study, you can download the published article appearing in the July issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology  in “The Effects of UV Emission from CFL Exposure on Human Dermal Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes in Vitro“.

Crazy, Sexy, Cool

Chill Out & Look Hot!

This month, Cosmo shared spa inspired tips to chill out (literally) – and get you touchable skin, luscious lips, and a tension free bod at the same time. Here are a few of our favorite tips that will help keep you crazy, sexy, cool!Frozen Pucker · Lips can’t sweat (skin’s natural cooling method), so freeze balm overnight then pop it in your purse in the a.m. It’ll stay frozen for about an hour – perfect for cooling off a steamy commute in the summer months.

  • Try COOLA Liplux SPF 30. Coola’s vitamin and antioxidant enriched formula soothes and nourishes, while the unique blend of fruit butters like Raspberry and Avocado hydrate the delicate skin of the lips. The lusciously refreshing scent will make you want to say MUAH! xx

Cold Feet · End a long day (or night) with this delicious pedi soak: Fill a bowl with a gallon of cool water, two cups lemon juice, two sliced lemons, and one-quarter cup vodka. When it hits the tops of your feet and ankles – two powerful pulse points – your whole body will feel amazing.

Icy Eyes · Your body can be slower at flushing out fluids in hot weather – and that means under-eye bags. Chill a spoon in the freezer, and press it along your orbital bones to up circulation and nix swelling. Or apply a refrigerated eye gel with a massaging eye tool; the kneading mimics the deflating effects of an energizing spa facial.

  • Try DDF Erase Eye Gel – a blend of seven natural bio-active ingredients to externally treat darkening and swelling under the eyes – together with the Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System that provides a soothing sonic action gentle enough for daily use.

Wipe Out · As a refreshing post sauna treat, top spas offer mini towels dunked in ice water. Survive nature’s sauna by tossing a pack of facial towelettes in a cooler before heading to the beach or park. “Press on into your neck for a quick chill”, recommends Champneys Group spa director, Jo Parker.

On the Rocks · One of the best perks of a day of pro pampering: ice-cold, fruit-spiked spa water. The delicious taste entices you to drink up – important since staying hydrated is key to keeping cool. Fill a pitcher with water, ice, the juice of half an orange , and pink grapefruit wedges.

5 Summer Time Tips for Looking Great

5 Summer Time Tips for Looking Great

For most people, summer is the best part of the year! The sun is chirping, the birds are shining, the water’s wet – people just seem happier! 🙂 Here are a few tips to get through a hot, summery day while feeling your most beautiful…

1. Drink Water. The summer—in particular, the sun and the heat—bring some hidden dangers. For your skin and body, it is important you drink enough water. You usually notice dehydration when it’s too late – a throbbing headache, a sore or dry throat, or chapped lips. To avoid this, always bring a bottle of water on hot days. Staying hydrated is important. Your body consists of over 70 percent water, and you will sweat through all your pores when it’s warm. It’s important to refill your H2O levels. I also like coconut water because it has the same pH level as your blood, and is considered one of the best hydrating drinks.

2. Avoid Sunburn/Use a Good Sunscreen. And what about the sun? Well, most people like to sunbathe and get a healthy glow, if not a tan. Unfortunately, some people overdo it and get sunburned. When you do burn, your skin is damaged forever. You might think a new layer of skin will appear after a few days of losing the dead skin, but the damage is more than skin deep—each sunburn increases your risk of getting a form of skin cancer. The best thing for your skin is to really avoid to get burned all together.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. Before I hit the beach, I use iS Clinical Translucent Powder Sunscreen SPF 20 on my face instead of my usual makeup for a quick and easy flawless look. It’s also works great as a setting powder over foundation while giving added protection. It comes in a self-dispersing brush applicator, which makes it perfect for touchups along the way. This powder sunscreen combines micronized zinc oxide and transparent titanium oxide to provide the finest and safest broad spectrum protection. In the summer, I never leave the house without it.

4. Eat enough. You need the energy to get through a hot day— it takes a lot from your body. I prefer light foods such as vegetable & fruit juices, salads and sushi. Eat serveral small servings throughout the day (that makes your stomach look flatter, too, as it is not filled up so much at once!).

5. Work out in the AM. It’s likely that you’re too tired after a day of work, but having a light workout in the morning hours when the sun is not so high up—the weather is not so hot yet, and you are energized after a good night sleep—is probably the best. This also makes for better circulation of your blood, and your body is perfectly ready to face a tough & warm day. You will sweat out all the bad toxins, and a nice shower afterwards makes you nicely refreshed!

What do you do to keep looking great in the hot summer sun?

Skin Care for Men

Men's Skin Care Issues
As a dermatologist, my opinion is that the #1 problem in men’s skin care can be summed up in one word: NEGLECT.
Dr. Susan Evans, MD, Expert Contributor of the Dr. OZ Show

That’s right, fellas, it’s time to stop thinking that skin care is only for ladies. Your skin is your largest organ. It is designed to protect you and your job is to protect it – not neglect it! We’re not telling you that you need to indulge in a daily regimen that will take hours and hours of time. On the contrary, taking care of your skin requires very little effort on your part. But, you do need to know what to do.

Problem #1: From a man’s perspective, the #1 skin care problem would probably be ingrown hairs as a result of shaving.

How do you take care of this? Try Dr. OZ’s following suggestions:

  • A manual razor with a single blade. The double and triple blades promise to give you a very close shave; this sounds good, but the closer you shave, the more likely you are to have those hairs curling below the surface of your skin resulting in razor bumps and infected hairs.
  • Shave in the shower. When your face is very wet, you minimize the likelihood of developing razor burn from too much friction.
  • Use a good lubricating shave cream or gel. Considering using a treatment regimen that contains either salicylic acid or glycolic acid, as it will help to remove the dead skin cells.
  • After shaving, make sure you moisturize your face. No, you don’t have to use the perfumed products of your sweetheart. There are very good men’s products out there. Find one you like and use it EVERY DAY!

We Recommend: Try Dermalogica Soothing Shave Cream or Dermalogica Invigorating Shave Gel to shave with comfort and ease. Follow with Neostrata Foaming Glycolic Wash to to gently exfoliate and unclog congested pores. Finish off with Neostrata Lotion Plus, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer that’s formulated with 15% glycolic acid to improve skin texture. 1-2-3…done! 🙂

Problem #2: Dry Skin
  • Most men find this to be a real problem in the winter, due to the decreased humidity in the air, or year round if you just live in a dryer climate. Run a humidifier inside your home, and if you’re the boss, do so at work too. Everyone will thank you. Also, you’ll find that creams are more moisturizing than gels.
  • Another contributor to dry skin can be an ongoing disease or condition like increased cholesterol or elevated blood sugars. You need to address these health problems by eating fewer processed and fast foods, increasing your omega-3 intake, and hitting the treadmill.
  • Increase your water intake. Don’t allow yourself to be dehydrated.
  • Don’t overuse soap and avoid really long, hot showers.
Problem #3: Forgetting SPF

Our last concern for the gentlemen is the use of sunscreen. When you’re in your 20s and 30s, you are usually very active, participating in a number of outdoor activities. Most men in this age group pay little attention to the need for sunscreen. Men, don’t ignore this. UVA and UVB rays are dangerous. It doesn’t matter if you’re young – you’ll pay the price – some of you sooner than later. As you age, you’ll find that even your hair is thinning and your scalp is exposed to those damaging rays of the sun. More men than women are seen for precancerous conditions of the scalp for this reason. Taking a few minor steps can prevent major skin concerns in your future.

We Recommend: For the best in sun protection, try SkinMedica Environmental Defense Sunscreen SPF 30. Its a state-of-the-art sunscreen product formulation that offers skin the ultimate defense against UV rays, environmental pollutants and free radical damage. And don’t forget to wear a hat!

Top 5 Vitamin C Serums

Top 5 Vitamin C Serums

While Vitamin C has a strong reputation for building up the immune system, it also has properties that have made it an increasingly popular ingredient in cosmetic skin care products. In 1992, Dr. Sheldon Pinnell of Duke University conducted a study that proved the vitamin-C form of L-ascorbic acid reduced sun damage. These findings resulted in further studies that proved vitamin C’s other positive effects on the skin. Today, vitamin C has become a star ingredient in facial serums.

Vitamin C is a prime ingredient of collagen, the substance that binds cells together. Collagen metabolism and production are key attributes of healthy, radiant, younger looking skin. Collagen, in fact, depends on vitamin C, which implies the vitamin’s importance to healthy, attractive skin. Stable collagen production fights wrinkles, and ensures evenness in the skin’s tone and texture. It can also be helpful for acne and acne scars.Vitamin C’s function as an antioxidant also benefits the skin, as it neutralizes and protects the skin from damaging free radicals.

A facial serum with vitamin C provides the most benefit in the vitamin’s topical application. In one of its derivative forms, vitamin C will penetrate the surface layers of the skin to deliver its collagen-stimulation benefits, and protect the skin from damaging environmental factors, like ultraviolet rays. One of the benefits of a vitamin C serum is that they are usually oil free formulations that are suitable for oily skin.  They can also be followed with your favorite moisturizer.  Serums usually lack creamy, soothing ingredients, so sensitive skin types may need to follow up with a cream or lotion.
