Beauty School Tips

Beauty School TipsLook your radiant best with these head-to-toe tips collected from the past 75 years of beauty issues!

Pretty Face

  • Don’t touch your face unnecessarily. Breakouts can be caused by your own fingers.
  • Apply cream or cleanser by lightly pressing upward—never down. The delicate skin sags easily enough in time.
  • For the best color match, test foundation and powder either on your face or neck (the inside of your wrist is too pale).
  • Use a concealer that is slightly lighter than your skintone, to cover up redness or blemishes.

Glowing Skin

  • The best time to apply lotion is right after a shower or bath, when skin is still damp – We recommend SkinMedica TNS Body Lotion for silky, smooth skin.
  • When drawing a bath, scatter bubbles or crystals directly under the faucet before turning on the water, but drop in perfume oil while the tub is filling.
  • Beautiful skin starts from within. Include lots of vegetables, fruit and water in your diet.
  • Overdo it with your perfume? Dab rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball on your skin. The alcohol will cut the scent without altering it.

Bright Eyes

  • Treat your eye area gently. This is the most delicate part of your face. Cleanse with care; blot, never rub.
  • Reduce puffy eyes by splashing with cold water or applying a cold compress (ice cubes in a washcloth): 15 seconds on, 15 seconds off.
  • When you put on mascara, don’t lower your chin—that’s how mascara gets on your lid.
  • Get eyeshadow to stay in place by priming lids with moisturizer and foundation – We recommend Murad Skin Perfecting Primer Dewy Finish
  • Always use your ring finger to apply moisturizer or concealer to the eye area. It puts the least amount of pressure on the skin.

Lovely Lips

  • Get lips soft and smooth by using a damp, warm washcloth at night to rub off the flaky dry bits; follow with a coat of lip conditioner – We recommend PCA Skin Peptide Lip Therapy.
  • Ease the evening switch to a redder or darker lipstick by applying it over and blending it into your daytime color.
  • To make lipstick last longer, allow it to set for a few minutes after applying, blot lips with tissue and dust them with powder, then apply another coat.
  • Cheeks feeling flushed? Put on a bold color lipstick; a neutral shade will only make red cheeks stand out.

Model Hands

  • Shape nails with an emery board, filing sides toward center—never straight across—and rounding off edges
  • What works for your face works for your hands. Remove age spots with facial brightening cream – We recommend PCA Skin Brightening Therapy with TrueTone.
  •  The fast way to remove nail polish: Hold cotton saturated with polish remover firmly on your nail for a few seconds to let it start working, then wipe nail clean.
  • Apply polish starting at the pinky, working toward the thumb to avoid dragging your hand across wet nails.

Happy Feet

  • To counteract dryness, massage feet with a lanolin-based lotion, kneading it deeply into your instep, then massage soles, heels, top surface and around nails – We recommend Murad Soothing Skin, Lip, and Cuticle Care Salon Size.
  • Before using a pumice stone or foot file to remove a callus, be sure to soak your foot in warm water for at least 5 minutes.
  • To prevent ingrown nails, trim toenails straight across, not down into the corners.
  • Relieve swollen feet by soaking them alternately in hot water (for 3 minutes), then cold water (for 1 minute), for a total of 15 minutes.

Hollywood Faces – Now & Then

You’re probably all too familiar with how the sun (and gravity) can age your skin over the years. What you may not realize is that there are other changes happening under the surface–fat being gained here and lost there, jawbones shrinking, eye sockets widening–that affect your appearance too. To make sense of this mysterious process known as (gulp!) aging, glo.msn.com compiled before and after photos of some of our all time favorite hollywood beauties. Click on the photos above to view how these six starlets looked up to 54 years ago and how they look today!

How to Age like a Supermodel

Some of our favorite supermodels are still looking great long after their days on the covers of magazines have passed. It is hard to beat Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, and Christie Brinkley when it comes to aging gracefully. These women look stunning! Luckily for us, these three gorgeous ladies have shared some of their tips on aging and still looking beautiful!

Cindy Crawford, Age 46

  • Workouts matter – Crawford does resistance workouts at least three times a week.
  • She is vigilant about skin care – she applies  vitamin-c serum, like SkinMedica Vitamin C + E Complex, in the morning, and uses a moisturizer with sunscreen, like Murad Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 20 PA ++, after work outs. She also uses an AHA pad, like Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pad, before bed a couple of times a week.
  • Crawford keeps her weight constant so she doesn’t stretch her skin with fluctuating weigh.

Heidi Klum, Age 37

  • Heidi thinks about her whole body when she thinks about aging – starting with nutrition. She drinks a glass of milk every night with dinner.
  • She keeps her energy level up by starting her days with early morning workouts.
  • Heidi never leaves the house without applying a moisturizing SPF, like Murad Clean Scene Down for Defense SPF 15 Moisturizer, to her face. “I learned not to go in the sun early on in my career. A tan lasts for a week or two before it fades, and the sun is so damaging—it’s not worth it.”
Christie Brinkley, Age 58

  • Brinkley eats a healthy diet because it helps her to feel her best. It’s not about the weight it’s about feeling good.
  • Christie is in perpetual motion. She incorporates simple exercises like squats and leg lifts into everyday activities. Why not do leg lifts when you’re drying your hair?

From the look of these photos, these women know what they are talking about! What do you do to age gracefully?

Get Better Skin While You Sleep

Sleeping Beauty

Just because you’re out cold doesn’t mean your skin is off the clock. In fact, the hours you’re sleeping may be the best time to help your skin look its best. Take advantage of the epidermal downtime with these easy tips to make you a sleeping beauty.

Just Add Water (and Soap)

Sounds like a no-brainer, but many women don’t bother washing their face at night, especially if they don’t wear makeup. Any dirt, debris, and oil that has collected on your skin will clog your pores while you sleep — and lead to inflammation and acne. If you don’t wash first, any product you apply won’t be as effective if there are layers of grime in the way. SSo, at night, be sure to wash your face with a gentle daily cleanser like, Pro+Therapy MD Skin Balancing Cleanser that removes environmental impurities, makeup and excess oil. You’ll want to take off any eye makeup as well — pigments from liners and shadows can get into your eyes and create irritation, and left-on mascara may cause your lashes to break.

Brighten, Hydrate, and Restore

“When asleep, your metabolic rate is lower, so you’re not producing as many skin-damaging free radicals. Plus, you’re not exposed to environmental pollutants or UV light that can harm the skin,” explains Mary Lupo, M.D., a New Orleans based dermatologist. “Because your body doesn’t have to work at skin protection overnight, it can instead focus on repairing the damage done throughout the day,” she says. So any products you use will be that much more effective at hydrating, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and brightening.

Assume the Sleep Position

Your most comfortable sleeping state may not be the best for your beauty. “The single biggest reason for accelerated aging of the skin is sleeping on your face,” warns Lupo. “The skin is compressed and doesn’t get enough circulation, so it breaks down and creases, forming wrinkles.”

And if you sleep face down, fluid pools and causes puffiness. Experts recommend sleeping on your back, with two pillows under your head to keep the blood flow moving. If it’s too tough to change your sleep position, consider a silk or satin pillow that won’t pull at the skin and use an eye cream like, DermaQuest C-Lipoic Eye Therapy to reduce dark circles and eliminate under eye puffiness.

Facial Scrub Tips for Glowing Skin

Facial Scrub Tips for Glowing SkinIf your skin is feeling dull and lacking that healthy glow, it might be a time for a facial scrub. It’s important to exfoliate your skin on regular basis to remove dead skin cells that can clog up pores, cause breakouts, and make your skin look less radiant. By removing the layer of dead skin cells, your skin’s new tissue is revealed.

There is great selection of products that are meant for exfoliating and scrubbing your face. When going beauty shopping for a facial scrub, shop with your skin type in mind. If you have sensitive skin, don’t buy the products with the most heavy chemicals. We recommend Wilma Schumann Gentle Skin Scrub, a gentle and natural skin scrub for deep cleansing and removal of impurities. If your skin is oily, go with the oil-free options like, SkinCeuticals Micro Exfoliating Scrub, designed to help open congested skin. This mild exfoliating gel combines natural microbeads with gentle cleansing and hydrating agents to thoroughly cleanse pores and promote healthy cell renewal without damaging or drying skin.  For dry skin, exfoliating is crucial because your skin will absorb any moisturizer you use much better. Try Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant, a non-abrasive exfoliation treatment to thoroughly remove dulling surface debris, dramatically improving skin texture and combatting dryness.

If you want to splurge a bit and bring that spa feeling to your home, consider buying an electric, battery-operated facial cleanser. Clarisonic Pro Skin Care System with 4 Speeds takes cleansing to a whole new level! Clarisonic is the sonic technology proven to gently yet effectively loosen dirt and oil to clear your pores. The Clarisonic Mia Skin Care System is a compact, take-anywhere version of the original, groundbreaking Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System. Both systems use sonic frequency pulses at more than 300 times per second, thoroughly cleansing pores and creating noticeably healthier looking skin.

Before & After Laser Resurfacing

Laser Skin Treatment - SkinMedix.comAfter you have made the decision to receive laser skin resurfacing treatments and your appointments are booked, you should start to prepare for caring for your skin. Skin care for laser resurfacing begins even before the procedure is performed. Most complications following laser resurfacing are caused by failure to properly take care of the skin after treatment. Using the right pre- and post-op skin care products will promote faster healing times and even reduce the appearance of bruising and discolorations immediately following your procedure.

(It is important to note, that in this post, the word “patient” is used because a medical professional is performing the actual treatments.)

Pre Laser Care

This consists of sun avoidance 3-4 weeks before and some pre conditioning with Retin-A therapy and bleaching topicals, likePCA Skin Pigment Gel. This exceptional combination of hydroquinone, phenylethyl resorcinol, and kojic, azelaic and lactic acids, helps to exfoliate, lighten and inhibit hyperpigmentation and age spots. These creams are usually stopped 5 days prior to the procedure.

Post Laser Care

There are three essential components of post laser resurfacing skin care:

  • The skin must be kept moist with topical cream or ointment
  • The skin must be kept clean, all secretions and skin debris removed
  • Sun block and prevention is essential for the new skin

Immediately after the procedure, a thin layer of petroleum ointment should be applied for approximately 5-7 days. For pharmaceutical grade petroleum, we recommend Skinceuticals Primacy Hydra Balm. Originally designed as a healing ointment, Hydra Balm accelerates recovery of skin surface lipids. Also during this period, it helps to keep the skin wet with frequent showers and soaking with wet gauze to help gently remove some of the sloughing skin.

Dead skin cells and secretions, if not removed, can lead to skin infection and subsequent complications such as scarring. Keeping the skin clean and free of secretions is very important especially during the first few days after laser resurfacing. Cleansing must be gentle, as you do not want to remove new skin cells that are forming after the laser treatment. The best, most effective, and comforting method is to apply saline soaked gauze sponges to the face. Every 3-4 hours the sponges are changed with a gentle wiping to remove accumulated debris. After 7 days most patients can begin using a gentle facial cleanser, like Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser. Formulated for sensitive or traumatized skin, this mild cream cleanser removes excess impurities and oil without drying the skin – ideal for following skin rejuvenating procedures. Most patients can also incorporate a gentle facial moisturizer, like Neocutis Bio-Restorative Cream with PSP. The first and original cream formulated with PSP, this product helps promote recovery and skin restoration after cosmetic or dermatological procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser and/or light treatments and cosmetic surgery.

After your skin has healed, you will also want to wear the right makeup – something you may not have even thought about. Certain makeup products are more irritating than others, and you will want to choose a makeup that is ultra sensitive and all natural for your post laser skin. Mineral makeup, like Priori Coffeeberry Perfecting Minerals (coming soon to SkinMedix!), is a great choice because it is all natural and does not cause irritation – even to the most sensitive skin. Also, with ingredients like zinc oxide built in, mineral makeup has sun protection, too.

After a few weeks, your doctor may recommend the use of a vitamin C serum and add back in a topical RetinA cream and/or a bleaching topical. We recommend Obagi Professional-C Serum 20%, a peptide and antioxidant blend that provides maximum daily antioxidant protection by repairing and strengthening skin cells and their function. The high levels of Vitamin C  offer greater penetration than other Vitamin C products, while improving elasticity and stimulating collagen production.

Sun avoidance continues for 4-6 months. That includes avoiding the sun as much as possible and using sunscreens, wide hats, sunglasses and so forth when having to be in the sun. Try Cellex-C Sunshade SPF 30 Plus, an azure-blue, alcohol free, sun protection cream containing beneficial sea botanicals and herbal extracts with exceptional calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Formulated to be used in conjunction with Retin-A therapy and other photosensitizing medications, including AHAs.

Lasers are excellent for many different types of skin resurfacing, but if you don’t do your part and take care of your skin before AND after the treatments, a lot of the benefit is lost and you take the risk of doing damage to the healthy delicate skin you worked so hard to get.

Don’t Buy Skin Care From Just Anywhere

What happens when you buy skin care from a "book store"

Think you’re getting a better deal somewhere else? Well, think again. One of our customers sent us this picture of her latest purchase when she decided to “see other people” and buy from another site. Her email reads,

I have purchased from SkinMedix for years, but when I saw this product at an unbelievable price on another site, I thought I’d struck gold. I was so disppointed when my package arrived and the product box was smashed. To make matters worse, the product was old and smelled terrible!!! The company won’t accept returns and won’t reply to any of my emails! What I thought a was a great deal, turned out to be horrible let down and a total waste of money! SkinMedix, I love you, and I’ll never leave you again!

Moral of the story? Don’t buy skin care from just anywhere. At SkinMedix, all of our products are guaranteed to be authentic and fresh from the manufacturer with original seals and packaging. Join the hundreds of thousands of people who have discovered the value and convenience of SkinMedix.com. We would love to count you among them! 🙂
